Scientists say that periodontal disease and poor dental health could be an early sign of Alzheimer's disease.

The brains of the dementia patients were found to show signs of the bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis, which may have triggered an immune response that lead to the death of neurons. This process could trigger the changes typical of Alzheimer's disease, causing symptoms of memory loss and confusion. The findings of the scientific study were reported in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease.
