Fundraising efforts have begun for the first-ever Oral Cancer 5K Run/Walk for Awareness Long Island

TIME:Registration ends at 8:50 a.m. Runners start at 9:00 a.m. Walkers start at 9:10 a.m.
RACE COURSE: 5K starts at Cedar Beach parking lot on Harbor Beach Road, Mt Sinai, N.Y. Our journey will head West down Harbor Beach Road along the beautiful winding shore line, turning around at the very end of Harbor Beach Road where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Long Island Sound before turning around and heading back East on Harbor Beach Road, passing the by the start, turning right on Pipe Stave Hallow Road, and then back toward Harbor Beach Road for your finish!

We have received a great response from the community already! We encourage people to start teams to help aid in the fight against oral cancer! Survivors are FREE, and we want to hear your story! Survivors will receive a special SURVIVOR T-shirt! If you have lost someone to this devastating disease or know someone who has, start a team and walk in memory or honor of them. We will be having a special memorial lantern release at the conclusion of the race. To date there has been no other outlet for oral cancer survivors and their support systems on Long Island. Take advantage of this opportunity to meet other survivors and share your stories.

We are doing FREE ORAL CANCER SCREENINGS for everyone! We will have music, face painting, food, goodie bags, T-shirts, raffles, prizes for finishers, and many more fun family activities! Approximately 43,250 people in the United States will be newly diagnosed with oral and oropharyngeal cancers in 2014. When found early, there is an 80% to 90% survival rate. However, due to a lack of public awareness, the majority of cases are found late-stage cancers that can be killers. The Oral Cancer Foundation is a national public service, nonprofit entity designed to reduce suffering and save lives through prevention, education, research, advocacy, and support activities. This race is organized and driven by the dental community! We are going to come out of our operatories and into the community to help spread the word about what a devastating disease oral cancer is. There will be vendors there to answer questions and discuss with you ways to decrease the growing number of diagnosed cases of oral cancer each year and have pamphlets of information for you to educate yourself about what you need to be receiving from your dentist at a routine visit.
